In order to acommodate to an international unified rating
level, a scale has been standardized to
rate avalanche danger from 1 to 5
(Source: Instituto
Catalán de Cartografía
- Catalonian Cartography Institute)
| Danger scale | Stability | Probabilities | Recommended actions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Danger 1: Low | Snow is generally stable on most slopes. | Avalanche probability is very unlikely. Avalanches are only likely in steep terrain (*). | Travel and ski descent is possible with almost no restrictions. |
| Danger 2: Moderate | On some steep slopes the snow is only moderately stable [**]. Elsewhere it is very stable. | Human trigerred avalanche is possible due to heavy loads (***) and on some steep terrain due to characterictics regularly described in the avalanche bulletin. Significant natural avalanches are unlikely. | Travel should be previously planned. Caution has to be taken when selecting itineraries, while steep terrain should be avoided. |
| Danger 3: Considerable | On many steep slopes [**] the snow is only moderately or weakly stable. | Avalanches may be triggered on many slopes even if only light loads are applied. On some slopes, medium or even fairly large natural avalanches may occur. | Steep terrain should be avoided as indicated. High experience and significant avalanche danger recognition is requested. |
| Danger 4: High | On most steep slopes [**] the snow is not very stable. | Avalanches are likely to be triggered on many slopes even if only light loads are applied. In some places, many medium or sometimes large natural avalanches are likely to occur. | Travel should be restricted to gentle slopes. Lower area of steep terrain may be exposed to avalanche too. |
| Danger 5: Extreme | The snow is generally unstable. | Even on gentle slopes, many large natural avalanches are likely to occur. | Travel should be avoided. |
(*) Slopes propitious for avalanche are those that meet certain inclination,
…
(**) Slope characteristics are generally described in more
detail in the avalanche bulletin (regarding the altitude, aspect, type of
terrain etc.)
(***) Heavy load: for example, groups of skiers.
Light load: single skier or mountain climber.
The expression "triggered avalanche" refers to the avalanche caused
by heavy load, specially by one or more skiers.
The expression "natural avalanche" refers to the avalanche caused
spontaneously.
